Gulf International Trucks has been serving the commercial truck needs of Victoria and the surrounding Gulf Coast and South Texas regions for over 50 years and now we are entering into a new era of service.  On June 1, 2008, Gulf International Trucks was purchased by Kyrish Truck Centers, a family owned dealership group with locations in Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Temple.  As part of the Kyrish Truck Center family, we can offer our customers a level of service unattainable by a stand alone dealership.

Customer Spotlight

While they only deliver to two Michigan counties, Powers Distributing has a huge presence in their market, distributing nearly every brand of beer to over 2400 outlets, from corner restaurants to large retailers like Wal-Mart and Costco. And this year, the 70-year-old company reached a major milestone when it introduced 15 International® DuraStar® hybrid tractors into its fleet.

Like many food and beverage distributors, Powers runs both bulk routes (pulled by International tandem axle trailers) and traditional sideloader delivery tractors, which now includes those new hybrids. We spoke with Gary Thompson, the company’s executive vice president and general manager, from his office in Orion, Michigan (just north of Detroit) and asked him about the make-up of his fleet, his decision to go hybrid, and his confidence in Navistar’s 2010 engine approach.

Question: What are some of the things you take into account when spec’ing your trucks?

Answer: Well, we overbuild the truck a little bit. And we’ve traditionally done that because [that] helps the truck wear better over time. We’re usually looking in the neighborhood of a 250 horsepower engine, and we upgrade the alternator, as well as the front axle and the wheels and springs.

Q: What’s the reason for those specific upgrades?

A: We want a tractor that’s going to last a good eight to nine years; it’s going to have to operate in cold weather, and we don’t want to snap a bunch of springs and we don’t want to have to carry a bunch of spare tractors. We only log 20,000 miles per year per route. But it’s all stop and start; it’s all in parking lots. They have big pot holes, and you need good springs and wheels or else bent wheels and flat tires are going to stop us from making those deliveries.

We deliver between 200 and 400 orders a day, and it’s really important for us that, when the driver walks out in the morning and turns on the ignition, that the truck runs and runs well for him the whole day. We have to get the customers their product. If we don’t, the shelves are empty and we both lose sales forever.

Q: What dictates those horsepower needs?

A: We go with the higher horsepower because, when you’re pulling a sideloader, you might have anywhere from 350 to 1500 cases of product loaded on the truck. It has to get up and get started. Based on retailer orders, anything can happen on any given day; any truck could be pulling over a thousand cases, so we need to have a tractor that works underneath that trailer no matter what size order comes in.

Q: You put 15 International DuraStar hybrid tractors into your fleet this year. What spurred that decision?

A: I started looking for hybrid trucks six or eight months before I got the proposal from International. I had already converted our sales management staff to hybrid cars, and the entire sales division to more fuel efficient cars. Because we log so many miles, I wanted to do what we could for the environment. We wanted to do the right thing.

We were initially concerned about the price [of hybrid trucks], but our dealer was able to demonstrate that, once you take into consideration the overall operating costs, I can get the incremental costs back over a period of time.

Q: Have the DuraStar trucks met your expectations so far?

A: I can tell you that we’re getting a 21 percent increase in fuel economy. And we’ve also been working with Navistar and Eaton and our dealer to make sure we’re doing everything we can to squeeze more efficiency out of those tractors: things like setting maximum speed settings, [incorporating] anti-idling devices. We’re doing some incremental things to inch that fuel mileage number up even higher.

Q: Going into 2010, what’s your confidence level with the new MaxxForce® engines?

A: Well, all of my hybrid trucks have MaxxForce engines, and we haven’t had any issues. I wouldn’t invest in these new trucks if I didn’t have confidence in their engines.

Trucks Introduction MyDealer2!!

Proficom

Construction

Whether the economy is flying high or stuck in a slump, working at peak efficiency is the key to consistent profits. But during a recession, it’s even more important that you keep operating costs low to match the market conditions. One surefire way to keep costs down and productivity up is to invest in a lighter truck.

“Weight is a huge factor for construction fleets,” say Melissa Gauger, severe service vocational marketing manager, Navistar. “It’s a simple equation: the lighter your trucks, the more you can haul. And these days, everyone’s looking for ways to increase their payload.”

Experts such as McGraw-Hill, a leading provider of construction news and forecasts, predict a double-digit uptick in construction starts in 2010 thanks to a long-awaited rise in the housing market and a continued expansion of public works projects from the government stimulus. But right now, in most geographic areas, the industry is still in a recovery phase. Running a lean operation can help you weather the storm while also positioning your company to maximize profits when bids ramp up.

Today, many fleets are choosing lighter, 13-liter engines as a sensible way to lowering operating costs. Engines like the MaxxForce® 13—currently available in International® WorkStar® trucks—offer plenty of power (from 410 to 475 horsepower), along with the benefits of several hundred pounds in weight savings when compared with heavier, 15-liter options.

And later next year, Navistar will introduce a version of the International PayStar® truck with the MaxxForce 11, which will feature horsepower ratings from 330 to 390. Both are highly versatile, with optional rear engine PTO for ready-mix trucks and optional front-engine PTO for plows or other construction applications.

The secret behind these lighter engines is their compacted-graphite iron cylinder block, an extremely strong foundation that delivers long service life without excess weight—and a high horsepower to weight ratio. And thanks to dual staged turbochargers and advanced air management, the engines also achieve peak torque at 1,000 rpm, reducing the need for gear shifting uphill and allowing shifting at lower speeds during acceleration.

This peak torque rating is especially relevant for construction fleets. For while many truck owners equate horsepower with power, industry experts point out that torque is often a far more important factor on the job site.

“Everybody translates horsepower into power. But a smaller, lighter engine typically produces more torque, which is the pulling power that’s needed to travel up a hill or across rugged terrain,” comments Scott Dols, president and CEO of Big Truck Rentals. “In a lot of cases, a lower horsepower truck will be more fuel efficient and carry a couple hundred more pounds of payload.”

“Our new Big Bore engines are in response to what customers are demanding,” adds Tim Shick, director of business and product strategy for Navistar Engine Group. “They’re saying: ‘Give me the power I need in a lightweight package. And I don’t want to give up durability.’”

2010 and beyond

Weight is a major factor as the industry moves towards the January 2010 emissions requirements. If you choose an SCR (selective catalytic regeneration) approach for your 2010 truck purchase, the added after-treatment system and urea associated with that technology is going to add another 300 to 400 pounds on a medium duty engine chassis and 400 to 500 pounds on a big bore chassis.

For fleets that traditionally run 15-liter engines, the heavier engine—combined with the SCR system—can add up to a significant drag on your bottom line. “We can provide a 13-liter that will be just as durable [as a 15-liter],” Shick points out. “And when it’s all said and done, you’re knocking on the door of a thousand pounds in weight savings without really giving up anything.”

“Looking forward to 2010, fleets are going to be running these new emissions-compliant trucks for many years,” says Gauger. “The [International] trucks will deliver long-term savings, because companies will be able to haul a lot more over time.”

The simplicity of the MaxxForce Advanced EGR approach also helps keep operating costs down. For one, you don’t have deal with an additional liquid such as urea. And there are no lights and buzzers on the dash that can distract your drivers from their jobs and sap productivity.

“[Fleet managers or business owners] have a million other things going on,” says Gauger. “Their job is to haul dirt or gravel or concrete. They want to be sure their vehicles are running every day, no matter what. In the end, our 2010 engine solution simplifies the operator’s experience with the truck. And it’s saving you weight, will which will help you make money in the long run.”

Finally, there’s the ease of working with one company that makes both your truck and your engine. This total vehicle integration means the vehicle and power train were designed to work together, resulting in products that are more reliable and easier to maintain. Because, of course, nothing increases cost of ownership more than having a truck sitting idle.

“When a customer has a vehicle in the shop, that’s money out of his pocket,” says David Allendorph, chief designer, global industrial design, for Navistar. “Quality, from our perspective, leads to more uptime. Our trucks and engines are well engineered for that specific reason: So they’re inexpensive to own and operate.”

Reduce Fuel Costs: Enable your Engine’s Idle Timer

Whether it’s due to environmental concerns or stricter government regulations, fleets are increasingly looking to cut back on truck idling. But perhaps the biggest rationale is the economic benefit: Along with extending engine life, it can also save your business significant dollars in fuel costs. And with an idle timer already built into the computer of all MaxxForce® engines, operations can easily limit the time their trucks run at low idle speeds.

An hour of idling time consumes about one gallon of diesel fuel. At approximately $2.60 per gallon for diesel fuel, this represents a direct added cost to the trucking industry of about 2.5 billion dollars each year. Estimates indicate that idle reduction technologies could reduce fuel usage by an additional 1 billion gallons annually, which translates into over 3 billion additional dollars in savings. And according to the EPA, NOx can be reduced by 180,000 tons per year, and particulate matter and CO2 reduced by 5,000 and 11 million tons, respectively, thanks to idle reduction.

And while some may wonder whether idle reduction technologies such as APUs (auxiliary power units) are cost-effective for their businesses, systems that help fleets use fuel more efficiently can pay for themselves through fuel savings.

But customers should be aware that all MaxxForce engines—and most Navistar diesel engines built since 1998—already come equipped with an idle shutdown program that limits operation of the engine at low idle speeds to the default value of five minutes. This idle timer is built into the engine’s computer and simply needs to be enabled.

Here’s how the idle timer works:

  • The red engine (OIL/WATER) indicator will illuminate, and an audible alarm will sound for 30 seconds before the engine shutdown.
  • Select mode 0 to turn Idle Shutdown OFF. (DEFAULT POSITION)
  • Select mode 1 to limit engine idle operation, EXCEPT when Engine Speed Control features are in use.
  • Select mode 2 to limit idle operation even when Engine Speed Control features are in use.
  • Select mode 3 to ignore Accelerator Pedal or Brake Switch circuit faults in addition to Engine Speed Control features.

It’s important to note that the 5-minute time period can be changed via the truck’s service tool, which is protected with your Customer Password. The minimum time limit for Idle Shutdown is 2 minutes. But to allow continuous use of the vehicle's climate control system in extreme weather conditions, Idle Shutdown is disabled for temperatures below 60 degrees (16 C) or above 110 degrees (44 C) Fahrenheit—or 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 C) for MaxxForce 5 engine. These temperatures can also be adjusted using the service tool.

The '5 minute' time period is reset when the engine is accelerated above the idle speed using the accelerator pedal. Vehicles equipped with Cruise Control or any Engine Speed Control feature may reset the timer by depressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal.

Idle shutdown will also not occur during the following scenarios:

  • When a Remote Engine Speed Control feature is in use, mode 1 only;
  • When the internal engine water temperature is cold--below approximately 140 degrees;
  • When the vehicle is moving. Sensor fault conditions can prevent the engine shutdown.

Debunking the idling myth

One of the primary reasons idling persists is due to the myth that diesel engines need to idle for 5 minutes or more in the morning, especially on cold days. “But the truth is, most engine manufacturers recommend that newer diesel engines run for no more than 3 minutes before driving,” says Bob Nietzel, vocational marketing manager, Navistar.

“Letting an engine idle actually does more damage to the engine than starting and stopping,” he continues. “Running an engine at low speed (idling) causes twice the wear on internal parts compared to driving at regular highway speeds, which can increase maintenance costs and shorten the life of the engine.”

Please check your owner's manual to find out specific warm-up guidelines for your vehicle.

Driver retention isn’t just about keeping drivers happy—it’s about keeping them healthy, and in turn, more productive. And perhaps the easiest way to improve a driver’s well-being is to invest in trucks that put a premium on ergonomics.

“If you go back forty or so years, companies didn’t think much about how drivers interacted with the truck,” says Lenora Hardee, Navistar’s chief engineer for human factors and ergonomics. “That’s certainly not true anymore. In today’s marketplace you absolutely have to worry about ergonomics.”

“We want a happy driver that doesn’t feel worn out and in pain after using our vehicles,” she continues. “We want to contribute to their quality of life, because that helps contribute to the bottom line of the company the driver works for.”

Think about workman’s compensation claims. When a driver is injured because of the vehicle he or she drives, that’s money out of your company’s pocket. A well-designed truck can help improve driver performance.

“By placing a driver in a cab that’s well-made ergonomically, it reduces fatigue, which contributes greatly to driver health. And a healthy driver means less sick days, which means less down time,” explains Hardee. “There are obvious safety benefits as well. You want your driver to be as alert as possible, and a more comfortable cab with better visibility goes a long way to helping keep eyes on the road.”

Benefits for medium-duty operators

While there is a great deal of science that goes into ergonomic design, the basic concept is simple: Make the truck easier to use. And that’s exactly what Navistar did with the development of trucks like the International® DuraStar® and International® WorkStar®--vehicles designed to deliver unprecedented uptime while also minimizing driver fatigue.

Both trucks have a distinctly automotive feel, with a cab that’s laid out so gauges are easy to see and compartments easy to reach. Steps and grab handles have been positioned to emphasize easy ingress and egress (entry and exit)—a huge benefit for delivery operations or construction and waste fleets whose drivers are constantly climbing in and out of the truck. And the sloped hood design of the DuraStar looks that way for a reason: It’s low to stay out of the driver’s line of sight as much as possible.

Medium-duty customers are also finding that International work trucks offer a smooth and quiet ride that withstands the rigors of even the toughest conditions. “I think we’ve done a good job paying attention to ride and handling,” says Hardee. “Our trucks are designed to better isolate potentially harsh vibrations.”

Spec the right seats

Even something as simple as spec’ing the right seat can help improve the health of your drivers—especially with statistics showing that roughly 40 percent of truck drivers suffer from some sort of chronic back problem. A very price-conscious fleet might choose a fixed seat with no vertical adjustment because it’s the cheapest option. But what these fleets may not be realizing is that they’re costing themselves money down the road by creating a driver with health issues.

If a fleet is interested in providing good accommodation for all of its drivers, it’s going to have seats with vertical adjustment. Air ride seats are also much more comfortable because the air will provide a little shock absorption so the driver doesn’t get banged around going down the road.

“I get calls from fleets that have taken the approach that they will spend not more than one penny [than they need to] on their trucks… and then they wonder why their drivers are complaining,” says Hardee. “Investing in ergonomics can cost more money up front, but it will save you money in the end.”

International® LoneStar® Wrecker Ready for Towing and Recovery Work

As soon as the International® LoneStar® tractor was announced in 2008, Miller Industries started fielding requests from customers wanting to mount towing equipment on the striking, one-of-a-kind truck. Now, after months spent working with International engineers, the two companies have developed the LoneStar Wrecker, a “tow truck on steroids” that’s powerful enough for recovery work but light enough for towing and transport.

“We had one customer who had only seen pictures of the LoneStar,” says Randy Olson of Ooltewah, Tennessee-based Miller Industries, the world’s largest towing equipment maker. “But he was adamant: That’s what he wanted his next unit to be.”

The challenge was that, for a towing application, the tractor needed a longer wheelbase. And it didn’t have a heavy enough frame or the appropriate suspension differentials. But the customer bought the LoneStar tractor anyway, and had extensive frame work done to stretch it out and accommodate a double frame rail. Three other operators went through the same expense, and were happy with the results.

Meanwhile, the folks at Miller got to thinking: Perhaps this souped-up tow truck could reach an even broader audience if they worked with International to develop a chassis with the necessary specs, which didn’t require the costly frame work.

“International is our number one seller of Class 6 chassis. And we felt there were enough potential buyers that, with the right specs, a Class 8 would be a natural fit,” explains Olson.

So engineers got to work making the necessary modifications, and created a chassis with a 309-inch wheelbase, a front axle bulked up to 14.6, and 46,000 pounds of rear suspension.

“One of the things about a towing application is, when you’re going down the road in a towing position, you’re offloading your front axle weight. So we design our equipment so it gives you more weight to the front axle in the unloaded position,” explains Olson. “Because once you’re loaded you want to maintain a safe front axle weight for steering.”

The LoneStar Wrecker made its official debut last November at the American Towman Exposition in Baltimore. After the show, Miller ordered an additional six chassis to meet the demand.

“This is a good universal truck that can do both recovery and towing,” notes Olson. “We’re confident in the International and believe in the product. Once the economy picks up, it’s going to be a long-term player in the market.”

Sidebar

Today’s drivers must contend with traffic, construction zones, and seemingly, more distractions than ever before. But safe driving is about more than just preventing crashes; it also helps improve the image of your fleet and can save your business money.

The price tag of an accident can include lost productivity, worker’s compensation, legal fees, property damage, missed deliveries, and the loss of a customer. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the average cost of a large truck crash is roughly $91,000 per incident. And a crash with injuries can cost much more.

No matter what type of trucks you run, drivers are the most important part of any safety program. That’s why we reached out to drivers with stellar safety records and asked them to share their secrets for success. The following are some real-world safety tips that all fleets should be following.

Schedule Regular Brake Inspections
It goes without saying that drivers need to inspect their vehicles before each trip and check the brakes regularly. While most trucks today have automatic brake adjustments, it still requires that the driver take time to get down on the ground and look under the truck.

“Some trailers have limited clearance. My trailer only had eleven inches and it was tough to get down there for 30 seconds,” notes Wayne Weisser, a former owner-operator and current managing editor for the trucking industry blog Life on the Road. “I compensated by scheduling truck inspections more frequently.” Consider having service personnel inspect the brakes during every other oil change, or perform an annual inspection on a quarterly basis as opposed to the standard once-a-year.

Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
According to industry estimates, roughly 90 percent of all tire failures are the result of under-inflation. “Most of the rubber you see along the road is due to neglect,” says Weisser. “Not from retreads failing, but from people letting the tire pressure go so low that it heats up and the tire blows up.”

To help ensure that tires are inflated properly, International® ProStar® and International LoneStar® trucks now feature SmartWave® Tire Pressure Monitoring Technology. The system constantly monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on the vehicle and provides real-time information on a display on the dashboard, helping warn the driver of tire-related problems before they become dangerous. For more information on this feature, check with your dealer.

Neutralize the “No-Zone”
Many drivers of cars and smaller vehicles are not aware of the size of a truck’s blind spot. Therefore, truck drivers should be extra vigilant watching out for vehicles that enter the “No-Zone”—the danger areas, or blind spots, where crashes are more likely to occur. If drivers complain about struggling to see the vehicles behind them, it might be time to invest in some additional side or auxiliary mirrors.

“If you can see vehicles from a distance, and then they disappear once they get closer to your truck, you know you have an issue,” notes Weisser. “But if you have enough mirrors, your blind spots should be minimal.”

Encourage Health and Wellness
Truck stops are not the most conducive places for physical activity. Still, drivers should try to get some exercise during breaks. Toni Chandler, the reigning Arkansas Truck of the Year winner, says her 1.8 million accident-free miles over 14 years can be attributed to many things, including getting plenty of rest and getting regular exercise to keep her alert behind the wheel.

“Truck stops have come a long ways in terms of trying to make their menus healthy,” adds Weisser. “But eating better and getting more exercise, those are things where there are plenty of excuses. We just need to do better.”

Deciding when to handle service issues in-house and when to go to the dealer is essentially a matter of risk tolerance. Utilizing internal resources might save you money in the short-term, but a trip to the dealer almost always ensures that the job will be done right.

“It really depends on how much liability you want to take on,” says Etienne van Niekerk, service education manager at Navistar, “because if you do the repair incorrectly, it can cause secondary damage. Some customers are OK with that risk. Others will do some work in-house, but for jobs that pose a greater risk, they’ll take the vehicle to the dealer instead.”

When under warranty, the decision is a no-brainer; of course you’re going to take advantage of the service plan provided as part of a new truck purchase. But things can get tricky for vehicles outside a warranty situation.

An operation’s size and mix of trucks can also impact how they choose to service their fleet. But consider these key factors, and you’ll have an easier time solving your own maintenance puzzle.

Weigh your risks

According to van Niekerk, operators should put pen to paper and determine whether the money saved is really worth the risk of taking on certain maintenance work. “If you have a simple brake job, you’re probably better off doing it yourself,” he says. “But if you’re smart about it, anything complex involving risk, you’ll figure what that risk is worth.”

Consider the skill set of your current technicians—for example, are they qualified to handle advanced steering or brake systems—and decide whether the money saved by not going to the dealer is comparable to the risk you’re taking.

And if you’re a small business just launching your own service department, keep in mind that, while you’ll be paying your in-house technician a lower hourly rate than the dealer rate (the difference is often around $100 an hour), a capable service program also includes investments in equipment and other hard costs.

“A lot of small fleets will use the dealer because they can’t justify investing in the infrastructure—or they don’t have the capital to invest,” explains van Niekerk.

Assess your fleet

“Finding the right service mix really depends upon the organization’s business model and what their needs are,” says Mike Hasinec, vice president of maintenance systems and support for Penske Truck Leasing.

For example, many over the road drivers typically utilize truck stops for routine maintenance not only for the convenience, but because of the growing shortage of technicians qualified to work on increasingly advanced trucks. “It’s faster to do maintenance on the road than to come in,” says Toni Chandler, a company driver from CalArk Trucking, “because we have more trucks than we have technicians.”

If your fleet consists of essentially the same equipment, ratcheting up your in-house service might be the right choice. In fact, many operators purchase the same trucks year after year for that very reason: so they don’t have to train their technicians on a variety of different vehicles.

But if you run a multitude of models and different types of utility vehicles, chances are you’ll need to outsource at least some work to the dealer. And for those owner-operators who handle their own maintenance, unless you’re enrolled in a program to keep you up to speed with technology, it’s probably smart to reach out to your local dealer. “It’s very difficult to be good at fixing everything,” says van Niekerk.

The 2010 emissions factor

Considering the complexity of today’s vehicles, small fleets need to assess whether their technicians are properly trained to handle not only the engine and truck components, but also the computers that control those systems.

“We’re moving into an area where much of the truck is controlled with software networks—and it becomes pretty complicated,” van Niekerk explains. “The days of a mechanic being someone who just wants to work with his hands are gone. …They have to be very smart people; they have to be researchers and problem solvers.”

If you do feature in-house technicians, they should have at least a basic knowledge of the new 2010-compliant engines, says Hasinec of Penske. “Increasingly strict emissions regulations and the push for companies to adopt a greener image means that even your older vehicles will likely need to be brought up to certain emissions standards over time,” he points out. “Having your own people aware of these new standards can give you peace of mind that all of your vehicles are in compliance.”

All of the above should come into play as you choose which 2010 engine technology works best for your operation. One advantage of the MaxxForce® Advanced EGR system is that it involves less new training for your technicians because the engine remains essentially the same. But trucks with urea-based SCR technology will require an added layer of training because of the additional after treatment system.

In addition to the need for additional technician training, there’s also the issue of residual value. If SCR is, as some have suggested, a temporary solution to meet 2010 standards, you may have trouble selling or trading in a truck with not only complex but also potentially outdated technology.

“A truck that has complex, outdated equipment that’s beyond its warranty period is going to have a lower residual value,” notes van Niekerk. “[If SCR technology] proves a short-term fix, it’ll be like trying to sell a Betamax player in a VHS world.”

Reduce Fuel Costs with MaxxPower® Battery-Powered HVAC System

Whether it’s due to environmental concerns or stricter government regulations, fleets are increasingly looking to cut back on truck idling. But perhaps the biggest rationale is the economic benefit: Along with extending engine life, it can also save your business significant dollars in fuel costs. And with the MaxxPower® battery-powered HVAC, drivers can now enjoy clean and quiet heating and cooling that’s also cost-effective for your operation.

An hour of idling time consumes about one gallon of diesel fuel. At approximately $2.60 per gallon for diesel fuel, this represents a direct added cost to the trucking industry of about 2.5 billion dollars each year. And the average long-haul sleeper averages 1,800 idling hours per year.

While some may wonder whether optional HVAC components are cost-effective for their businesses, the fact is idle reduction technologies that use fuel more efficiently can pay for themselves through fuel savings. The initial cost and fuel savings dollars can be used to determine the payoff point. And from that point on, all fuel savings are pure profit.

An HVAC solution designed specifically for International® trucks

International® ProStar® and LoneStar® trucks can now be ordered with the MaxxPower battery-powered HVAC, the only 12-volt system on the market that meets the Technology and Maintenance Council’s stringent recommended practices for heating and air-conditioning. By drawing power from additional batteries, the truck can produce 6,000 BTU/hour of cool air, or 17,000 BTU/hour of heat and run for a minimum of ten hours per charge. Batteries will then recharge after just two hours on the road and can be counted on for a lifespan of more than two years.

“One of the biggest benefits of the MaxxPower system is that it makes expensive retrofits a thing of the past,” notes Chris Farrar, vocational marketing manager, Navistar. “The components are all designed by International, and made specifically for International trucks. That means you can have confidence that they’ll work together in perfect synchronicity for ultimate performance.”

Truck owners can also be confident in International’s industry-leading warranty coverage, and the fact that the system is backed by North America’s largest and most trusted dealer network.

“With MaxxPower systems, customers now have a cost-effective option for reducing fuel consumption and idling time,” adds Farrar. “Over time, this investment can result in powerful fuel savings.”

J.O. Stickley & Sons ( Highway Motors’ parent company) was started in 1929 on Main St. in Harrisonburg. By 1946 the business had grown to where it was necessary to separate the farm implement and truck business. The new company was called Truck Sales Inc. The officers were J.O.Stickley, Dan C. Stickley and C.W. Carmody. In 1949 the  dealership moved to US 11 north of Harrisonburg. In 1950 Truck Sales Inc. acquired the Chrysler–Plymouth automobile franchise and changed its name to Highway Motors Inc. to better describe the services offered.

Highway Motors continued to grow throughout the next three decades under the direction of Elmer Kramer and Dave Turner. In 1984 William F. Mohr of Richmond bought the corporation from Dan C Stickley, Elmer Kramer, and David Turner. Thomas W. Mohr joined the company as president in 1985. A strategic move was made in 1990 when they sold the Chrysler-Plymouth business to Hartman Motors, a Harrisonburg auto dealer, and concentrated on the medium and heavy truck business. The car shop was torn down and a modern 12 bay truck shop was built in its place signifying a major commitment to their truck customers. Another important milestone came in 1994 as HMI acquired the Roanoke market with an additional 14 counties. They are now responsible for 29 counties stretching along 300+ miles of I-81 in western Virginia including the cities of Winchester, Leesburg, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Covington, Lexington, Martinsville Roanoke, Salem and Blacksburg. This expansion required the opening of  a new location in  Roanoke. Thomas W. Mohr bought the corporation from his father in December 1998. The latest expansion was the purchase of Fleet Maintenance Service in Winchester Va. This acquisition provided yet another parts and service location on the     I-81 corridor. In order to better serve their customers and provide additional transportation services they opened a full service leasing and rental company operating under the name of Highway Motors Idealease. They currently have 140 power units and  11 trailers in service. Highway Motors Idealease operates out of Harrisonburg, Winchester and Roanoke Va.

Highway Motors currently has 120+employees at four locations in Harrisonburg, Winchester and Roanoke VA They are a franchised dealer for International Truck and Engine Corporation whose world headquarters are in Chicago Il. International is a leading producer of heavy and medium duty trucks and school buses and a worldwide leader in the manufacture of mid-range diesel engines produced in the range of 160-340 horsepower for the International brand.

Aero Long Haul

Whether the economy is flying high or stuck in a slump, running at peak efficiency is the key to making money on the road. But during a recession, it’s even more important that you keep operating costs low to match the market conditions. One surefire way to keep costs down and productivity up is to run the lightest truck possible.

“It’s a simple equation: the lighter your trucks, the more you can haul,” says Chris Farrar, marketing manager, Navistar. “And these days, everybody’s trying to add one more pallet for their customers.”

There are several ways to cut weight in Class 8 on-highway vehicles. Some fleets and owner-operators utilize super-single tires. Others might choose a particular front axle, frame rail, or rear suspension that pulls weight out of the truck. Some are even choosing new pallet packaging made of lighter materials. But in most cases, it’s the engine itself that is responsible for the extra bulk, which is why many operators are opting for lighter 13-liter engines versus the traditional 15-liter.

A key question to ask yourself is: Does it provide value to your business to save a couple hundred pounds in weight? If so, you’re going to want to consider running a smaller engine. And with the MaxxForce® 13, available in the International® ProStar®, truck you can take advantage of the additional payload of a lighter engine—plus benefit from better fuel economy—all without sacrificing power.

“Our new Big Bore engines are in response to what customers are demanding,” says Tim Shick, director of business and product strategy for Navistar Engine Group. “They’re saying: ‘Give me the power I need in a lightweight package. And I don’t want to give up durability.’”

The secret behind these lighter engines is their compacted-graphite iron cylinder block, an extremely strong foundation that delivers long service life without excess weight—as well as a high horsepower to weight ratio. And thanks to dual staged turbochargers and advanced air management, the engines achieve peak torque at 1,000 rpm, which reduces the need for gear shifting uphill and allows shifting at lower speeds during acceleration.

“Many fleets have the misconception that the higher horsepower 15-liter engines translate to more power, but in actuality, torque is a much more vital factor when considering a truck’s power,” says Farrar. “Our customers are running 80,000-pound loads and [the 13-liter engines] are working out very well for them.”

2010 and beyond

Weight is also a major factor as the industry moves towards the January 2010 emissions requirements. If you choose an SCR (selective catalytic regeneration) approach for your 2010 truck purchase, the added after-treatment system and urea associated with that technology is going to add another 400 to 500 pounds to the engine.

Additionally, in the case of the 2010 International ProStar truck, Navistar engineers analyzed every inch of truck to cut more than 700 pounds, with more than 180 pounds in weight reduction from the interior alone.

“Looking forward to 2010, fleets are going to be running these new emissions-compliant trucks for many years,” says Farrar. “The trucks will deliver long-term savings, because companies will be able to haul a lot more over time.

“Some of our competitors are claiming that utilizing SCR will provide better fuel economy,” he continues. “But fuel economy is just one factor when considering overall operating costs. The bigger question is: If you’re adding several hundred pounds of additional equipment to the truck, will you be able to haul what you were hauling before [incorporating the SCR system]?”

Finally, there’s the ease of working with one company that makes both your truck and your engine. This total vehicle integration means the vehicle and power train were designed to work together, resulting in products that are more reliable and easier to maintain. Because nothing increases cost of ownership more than having a truck sitting idle.

“When a customer has a vehicle in the shop, that’s money out of his pocket,” says Farrar. “Quality, from our perspective, leads to more uptime. Our trucks and engines are well engineered for that specific reason: So they’re inexpensive to own and operate.”

From dump bodies designed to work with International® chassis, to its fully integrated 2010-compliant MaxxForce® engines, Navistar will be showcasing the power of integration at the upcoming World of Concrete show. If you’re planning to attend, visit Booth C5622 to take an up-close look at the latest trucks and engines designed for the construction industry.

Happening at the Las Vegas Convention Center from February 2-5, World of Concrete is the only annual event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction industries. At the show, attendees will be able to view International PayStar® and International WorkStar® integrated dump trucks—both equipped with MaxxForce 13, 475 horsepower engines—as well as the debut of a brand new spec of the International WorkStar, featuring a 390-horsepower MaxxForce 11 engine.

“We’re going to be sharing some big news at this year’s show,” promises Melissa Gauger, severe service marketing manager, Navistar. “And we’re really excited to give construction firms the chance to learn more about how our 2010 big bore engines can be tailored to meet the industry’s unique application needs.”

All of the new MaxxForce brand big bore engines deliver outstanding power and fuel economy thanks to a high-pressure common-rail fuel system and twin-series turbochargers. Built on a compacted-graphite iron cylinder block, the engines provide long service life without excess weight. They’re also incredibly quiet, offering the operator increased comfort and reduced fatigue.

With this year’s show coming on the heels of the January 2010 emissions requirements, visitors who stop by the International booth will also get an opportunity to find out more about the manufacturer’s MaxxForce Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) solution.

As the only North American truck and engine maker not pursing liquid based urea selective catalytic reduction(SCR-urea) to meet 2010 standards, International brand trucks will not require operators to add liquid urea or DEF (diesel emissions fluid). And especially pertinent for construction fleets, truck configuration and exhaust after-treatment remain the same, whereas trucks utilizing SCR-urea systems must contend with a potential 400 pound payload penalty.

“Our approach really makes a lot of sense for construction companies,” adds Gauger. “As the economy starts to ramp back up and firms are competing for bids, the last thing they need is something else to think about. Our integrated approach to trucks, engines, and now truck bodies, is all about keeping things simple.”

Construction

Whether your trucks are on the job site or driving along the highway, safety is a vital part of any fleet operation. Luckily, International® trucks can be equipped with safety features that address the specific concerns of your business.

All International vehicles built since 2001 feature the Diamond Logic® system, a series of virtual switches and interlocks that can protect the operator from hurting himself or damaging valuable equipment. Controlled by an onboard computer, Diamond Logic has been utilized in countless configurations for different applications.

One commonly-used Diamond Logic feature is the parking brake alarm: If the driver turns off the key and opens the door without setting the parking brake, the vehicle will begin honking to alert the operator—as well as others around the vehicle—that the brake has not been applied. This feature, which is only available on International trucks, is especially valuable for delivery or beverage fleets where the operator is constantly getting in and out of the truck.

Another example is the boom storage alarm used by many utility fleets. When a utility truck operator drives away without the boom properly stored, it can easily do thousands of dollars worth of damage—not to mention endanger other vehicles on the road. To combat this problem, Navistar engineers used Diamond Logic to send a signal from the switch at the back of the truck to the parking brake. “Now, the truck won’t release the parking brake unless the boom is stowed,” explains Bob Neitzel, vocational marketing manager, Navistar. “And if the driver tries to release the brake, a light goes on [telling him the boom isn’t stowed].”

Vehicles with a PTO (Power Take-off) could be candidates for more complex functions. “When the PTO is in operation, there might be directives such as: the transmission has to be in neutral; or the engine has to be moving at a specific rate, or there could be a temperature gauge on a hydraulic pump that says it’s ready to go,” Neitzel says.

“The best thing about Diamond Logic is it gives us a great tool box of electronic ways to protect operators from getting in situations that could be risky.”

Stability Technology

Recent years have also seen the release of increasingly advanced optional onboard safety systems aimed at reducing the number and severity of crashes. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration estimates that between 1,500 and 2,000 rollover crashes could have been prevented using these systems.

International® DuraStar®, WorkStar®, and TranStar® vehicles can be purchased with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), commonly referred to as “full stability,” designed to mitigate rollovers and loss of control situations on dry, wet, snow and ice-covered roadways.

Many rollover situations occur when a truck negotiates a curve at too high of a speed. But according to a recent Large Truck Crash Causation Study, an estimated 28.6 percent of commercial vehicle accidents are caused by a “loss of control factor.” When the driver makes a maneuver, it can cause a reaction in the tractor-trailer chain, resulting in an over-steer situation that leads to a jackknife—or an under-steer to sends the vehicle off the road.

For a straight truck, this reaction happens even faster—the driver doesn’t have the lag time advantage that can help a tractor-trailer right itself. And construction bodies like cement mixers often experience rollovers and loss of control situations because of their top-heavy equipment.

To minimize these accident scenarios, full-stability systems use what’s called a yaw sensor to measure the directional stability of the vehicle—plus a steering-angle sensor that measures the driver’s steering intent.

“The sensors [on a full-stability system] read both what the vehicle is doing, and what the driver intends the vehicle to do,” explains Fred Andersky, director of marketing – controls, at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, which supplies brake and safety technology for International trucks. “When the driver’s intent and what the vehicle is doing differ, the system recognizes this as a potentially dangerous situation. So the system will first reduce the throttle; and then apply the brakes on all—or select steer, drive wheel ends or trailer axles—to help the driver get the vehicle back under control.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) has mandated these full-stability systems for cars, light trucks and SUVs, with regulations taking effect in 2009 and full compliance required by 2012. And according to Andersky, similar mandates are being considered for Class 6, 7, and 8 air-braked combination vehicles in the near future.

“Stability cannot replace the need for safe driving practices,” Andersky points out. “But especially with new drivers, it can help them through the learning curve. And with experienced drivers, it may help in those unexpected situations.”

Waste

While there is a great deal of science that goes into ergonomic design, the basic concept is simple: Make the truck easier to use. And that’s exactly what Navistar did with the development of trucks like the International® ProStar® and International® LoneStar®--vehicles designed to deliver unprecedented uptime and minimize driver fatigue.

Both trucks have a distinctly automotive feel, with a cab that’s laid out so gauges are easy to see and compartments easy to reach. Steps and grab handles have been positioned to emphasize easy ingress and egress (entry and exit). And the sloped hood design looks that way for a reason: It’s low to stay out of the driver’s line of sight as much as possible.

Even the LoneStar, which combines the best elements of the classic, Western-style truck with today’s modern aerodynamic tractors, offers excellent visibility—along with an amazingly quiet ride.

The sleeper in International over-the-road vehicles was also designed with maximum comfort in mind—so the driver can wake up refreshed and minimize the chances of drowsiness or fatigue-induced accidents. And the new LoneStar features the latest technology in the form of “Latto Flex” mattresses, originally designed for the medical industry, which absorb the impact of the road. “For fleets with team drivers, it reduces vibrations so the person in the bunk can sleep better,” notes Hardee.

But what these fleets may not be realizing is that they’re costing themselves money down the road by creating drivers with health issues.

Waste

Last month, President Barack Obama visited Navistar’s Wakarusa, Ind., manufacturing facility to celebrate the award of a $39 million federal grant to develop and build the next phase of clean vehicles: zero tail pipe emission all-electric trucks.

Through this U.S. Department of Energy Grant, Navistar intends to build 400 all-electric vehicles in 2010, with the goal of producing several thousand vehicles annually in the coming years. At least initially, these trucks will be targeted to urban businesses where stop and go driving would otherwise consume large amounts of fuel, such as utilities and pick-up and delivery companies.

“Vehicles with a range of a hundred miles that are all-electric and can be charged overnight, there’s no doubt they could be very beneficial in places like New York City and other concentrated urban areas,” notes Darren Gosbee, director, hybrid strategy and execution, Navistar.

This presidential funding announcement marks the latest step in Navistar’s ongoing commitment to advancing the latest clean vehicle technologies. In 1989, Navistar was the first original equipment manufacturer to release the smokeless diesel engine and, in 2001, Navistar was the first engine manufacturer to gain certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for meeting particulate and hydrocarbon emissions standards—six years ahead of schedule.

Navistar was also the first to enter assembly-line production of commercial diesel hybrid trucks and school buses. Recently, the OEM reached a major milestone when its hybrid vehicles exceeded five-million real-world miles after less than two years on the road.

The current hybrid line-up includes the Class 6 medium-duty International® DuraStar® Hybrid, which has been strongly-received in the municipal work truck market, and the Class 7 International DuraStar Hybrid Tractor, which is proving particularly effective for general freight haulers and food and beverage distributors with diminished loads. This past spring, Navistar also introduced the Class 7 severe service International WorkStar® Hybrid 4x4, the industry’s first four-wheel-drive commercial truck.

“The continued success of these trucks on the road demonstrates not only the reliability of hybrid technology, but also the potential for significant fuel savings and emissions improvement within real-world applications,” says George Survant, director of fleet services for Florida Power and Light and chairperson of the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) Working Group.

And now, with government support behind the development of the industry’s first purpose-built all-electric truck—one that’s been designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle—Navistar is achieving the pinnacle of clean vehicle technology: zero tailpipe emissions.

Waste

Whether the economy is flying high or stuck in a slump, working at peak efficiency is the key to consistent profits. But during a recession, it’s even more important that you keep operating costs low to match the market conditions.

While residential waste business has remained steady during the downturn—more people are staying in for meals and cutting back on out-of-home entertainment, but they are still producing trash— commercial as well as construction and demolition debris collection remains slower than in the past. However, recent industry forecasts predict a double digit increase in construction starts in 2010, and some waste firms are reporting a slow uptick in bids. Running a lean operation can help you weather the storm while also positioning your company to maximize profits when business ramps back up.

Because of today’s increasingly tight margins, more and more fleets are recognizing that one surefire way to keep costs down and productivity up is to invest in lighter trucks. And as we stand on the cusp of the January 2010 emissions requirements, fleets should be aware of the weight differences between the two engine solutions available to meet the new standards.

The 2010 engine decision

The fact is, if you choose an SCR (selective catalytic regeneration) approach for your 2010 truck purchase, the added after-treatment system and urea associated with that technology is going to add another 300 to 400 pounds on a medium duty engine chassis and 400 to 500 pounds on a big bore chassis. Considering most waste firms carrying trash or recyclables are paid by the pound or ton, this added bulk could seriously impact your bottom line, or worse, cause you to run overloaded. In contrast, choosing MaxxForce® Advanced EGR—the solution offered in vehicles such as the International® WorkStar® truck—can actually give your business a leg up on the competition.

“Weight is a huge factor for waste fleets,” say Melissa Gauger, severe service marketing manager, Navistar. “It’s a simple equation: the lighter your trucks, the more you can haul.”

The simplicity of the MaxxForce Advanced EGR approach can also help keep operating costs down. For one, you don’t have deal with an additional liquid such as urea. And there are no lights and buzzers on the dash that can distract your drivers from their jobs and sap productivity.

From a packaging standpoint, MaxxForce Advanced EGR also provides a simple solution because the truck configuration stays essentially the same. Most waste and refuse companies are already restricted when it comes to chassis configurations— PTOs, pumps, bodies, and body hydraulics takes up a lot of space. The complexity of the SCR system, which requires a tank, an additional catalyst, wiring, as well as the pump, could require cumbersome changes to body installations to accommodate the additional aftertreatment.

“[Fleet managers or business owners] have a million other things going on,” says Gauger. “Their job is to haul refuse from the curb to the landfill. They want to be sure their vehicles are running every day, no matter what. In the end, our 2010 engine solution simplifies the operator’s experience with the truck. And it’s saving you weight, will which will help you make money in the long run.”

Plus, there’s the benefit of working with one company that makes both your truck and your engine. This total vehicle integration means the vehicle and power train were designed to work together, resulting in products that are more reliable and easier to maintain. Because, of course, nothing increases cost of ownership more than having a truck sitting idle. “We purposely bought International trucks because they are easy to operate, there’s not a lot of deviation, and they’re somewhat bullet proof,” notes Adds Scott Dols, president of Big Truck Rentals, a supplier of waste industry equipment.

Diamond Logic® diagnostic solutions

Another way International trucks minimize downtown is with its proprietary Diamond Logic® Electrical System, a multiplex technology that operates like a central nervous system to alert you when regular maintenance is needed and troubleshoot potential problems before they become critical issues.

Donald Sutton, president of Tri-State Tank, a truck equipment manufacturer from Kansas City, Missouri, says his truck maintenance has become easier and much more streamlined thanks to the intelligence provided by system. Since the company doesn’t service the truck itself—only the pumps, valves and other body equipment it installs—technicians can easily tap into Diamond Logic onboard diagnostics and determine the source of a problem.

“Diamond Logic makes the [troubleshooting] process faster, more efficient, and less costly,” says Sutton. “Because we can access International via our laptop, we’re able to pinpoint failures quickly, make adjustments or repairs, and return the unit to service. It saves our customers repair costs and down time.”

“When a customer has a vehicle in the shop, that’s money out of his pocket,” adds Gauger. “Quality, from our perspective, leads to more uptime. Our trucks and engines are well engineered for that specific reason: So they’re inexpensive to own and operate.”

MaxxForce® Big Bore Engines Garner Rave Reviews

With a full year in the marketplace and more than 5,200 units built, Navistar’s MaxxForce® 11- and 13-liter big bore heavy-duty diesel engines are impressing operators across North America, who are reporting a whole new level of performance, drivability and fuel efficiency.

MaxxForce big bore diesel engines were designed and engineered specifically for the International® WorkStar®, International TranStar® and Internationl ProStar® Class 8 commercial trucks. Using the latest in innovative technologies—from a compacted graphite iron (CGI) block to a high-pressure, common-rail fuel system and advanced electronic controls—the MaxxForce 11 and MaxxForce 13 deliver outstanding fuel economy, excellent power and torque, and quiet operation with low noise, vibration and harshness.

“What really drove us toward the MaxxForce engines were the upcoming emissions requirements,” said Al Dirth, vice president of operations for Brockway-Smith Company (BROSCO), a wholesale millwork distributor based out of Andover, Mass. “It seemed like a no-brainer. I didn’t want to get into a system that would require us to put in an extra urea tank, which would need an extra heating and cooling system, etc. To me, if I could make my life simpler, why not do it?”

Beyond the customer-friendly simplicity of the MaxxForce Big Bore, Tennant Truck Lines, Inc. (TTL) of Orion, Ill. is realizing tremendous improvements in fuel economy. With more than 75 trucks in its fleet, TTL is an open deck carrier that transports heavy farming machinery.

“It’s a tough time to be in this business, and with fuel currently our biggest expense, we’re trying to cut costs wherever we can,” says Bob Tennant, president of TTL. “Compared to the competition, our MaxxForce 13s are getting upwards of a half-mile to the gallon better fuel economy on the same haul.”

“It wasn’t that long ago, to get even seven miles-per-gallon was unheard of in a semi-truck,” adds Gary Holderness, a TTL driver. “And, to be getting the kind of fuel mileage I get, eight miles-per-gallon, that’s way up there.”

Another customer impressed with the performance and fuel efficiency of the MaxxForce big bore is TC Trans, Inc. Based out of Blaire, Wash., TC Trans specializes in cross-border freight services, with loads going into and out of Canada.

“Switching to the new technology in the MaxxForce big bore is one of the best things we’ve done,” said Chuck Schamel, vice president of TC Trans. “We’ve actually run our MaxxForce 13s against the other 15-liter engines and we’re able to stay right with those trucks. On top of that, the MaxxForce engine is getting about eight percent better fuel economy than a15-liter—and that’s a huge difference. Every ounce of fuel that stays in the tank, that’s less money that I’m paying out of my pocket to get the job done.”

A Smooth, Quiet Ride

Built on a lightweight CGI block, MaxxForce Big Bore engines deliver remarkably low noise, vibration and harshness characteristics, helping the International ProStar cab achieve best-in-class quietness.

“It’s the quietest engine I’ve ever driven in my life,” adds Tennant. “I was down at our terminal near the Moline airport and was walking around behind the trailers. That MaxxForce engine is so quiet, it wasn’t until I heard the fan kick on that I realized the engine was running. …With the MaxxForce engine, it’s a better running, better handling truck.”

Mike Curtis, a BROSCO driver agrees. “It’s like driving your own pick-up truck. “You’re climbing a pretty steep hill with the engine at 1,500 rpm and all you can hear is a slight hum. It goes down the road smooth and the engine’s about as silent as a graveyard.”

Construction

In the Big Bore engine market, the mentality used to be “buy the biggest engine you can.” But modern engine design is challenging that traditional thinking.

Technology improvements, as well as recent economic conditions, are re-defining the 13-liter engine category for fleets. Previously, their choices were: Purchase an economical lightweight engine rated up in horsepower; or more typically, buy a more expensive 15-liter engine, rate it down, and then turn it up to a higher horsepower to sell on the secondary market at a premium price.

Today’s new business model is easier: Simply let the power you need dictate the engine you choose. Fleets are paying less on the front end and choosing a 13-liter engine like MaxxForce® 13, which delivers substantial power thanks to technologically advanced fuel and turbocharger systems. And for those requiring a little less horsepower, MaxxForce now offers a cost-effective 11-liter engine that’s essentially a downsized 13-liter.

Because both engines are made with ultra-durable compacted graphite iron, which provides a considerable strength advantage over standard grey iron engines, they will also bring excellent resale value.

Even fleets that really need a higher horsepower rating will soon have a smarter option with the MaxxForce 15®, a new 15-liter model created to achieve the power and torque expected from an engine of that size, along with the superior fuel economy and quietness integral to the MaxxForce design approach.

But before choosing an engine, fleet managers and small business owners need to ask themselves some important questions to determine the right fit for their application. Below, we offer four reasons why today’s new generation Big Bore engines might make sense for your operation.

Resale Rules Are Changing

“Fleets used to go with the largest engine possible, down-rated for power, with the first purchase,” explains Tim Shick, Director of Sales, Navistar Engine Group. “They knew they would get a product that would hold up over time, and if they utilized its electronic features, they could use the power judiciously. And when it went on the used truck market, they could resell it at a good price because it has been babied.”

The problem, according to industry experts, is the residual value in secondary markets is not the same as it used to be. Last year’s sky-high fuel prices caused many buyers to re-evaluate their engine needs because of the fuel economy loss associated with a 15-liter engine. Now, with less of a market for huge 550-horsepower engines, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to recoup those higher front-end costs.

“The trucks those engines are most attractive in – the square nose ‘land yachts’ with big power – have taken a huge hit in value,” says Shick. “It doesn’t carry the premium it used to… the owners looking for those trucks are especially hard hit by the economy.”

Do You Want to Lose Weight?

In today’s marketplace, nearly every truck application is weight sensitive. It’s a fact: In most hauling scenarios, trucks max out their weight capability before they run out of room in the trailer.

A key question to ask yourself is: Does it provide value to your business to save a couple hundred pounds in weight? If so, you’re going to want to consider running a smaller engine. And the good news is, you can now purchase a lighter engine like the MaxxForce 13 and take advantage of the additional payload and better fuel economy without sacrificing power.

“Our new Big Bore engines are in response to what customers are demanding,” adds Shick. “They’re saying: ‘Give me the power I need in a lightweight package. And I don’t want to give up durability.’”

Be Prepared for 2010

Weight is also a major factor as the industry moves towards the January 2010 emissions requirements. If you choose an SCR (selective catalytic regeneration) approach, the added after-treatment system and urea associated with that technology is going to add 300 to 400 pounds on a medium duty engine and 400 to 500 pounds on a Big Bore.

“For fleets that have traditionally been using a 15-liter engine, we can provide a 13-liter that will be just as durable and will save you 400 pounds with the engine, and another 400 to 500 pounds with our MaxxForce Advanced EGR solution,” Shick points out. “When it’s all said and done, you’re knocking on the door of a thousand pounds in weight savings without really giving up anything.”

No Body Configuration Challenges

Another issue with SCR-equipped engines is that body makers are going to be challenged with even more apparatus on the truck. “The thing about SCR is it takes away the versatility and the options of the body maker,” explains Shick. “This is just one more fairly significantly sized area in a very specific place on the truck that gets taken off the board as far as a place to work with… they can’t move it, they can’t take pieces out and move them somewhere else; it has to stay pretty much where it was placed by manufacturer.”

This can lead to major headaches for body makers, who in extreme cases are going to have to lengthen the wheelbase of some vocational trucks in order to make room for belly plows or other equipment along with the additional after-treatment. This is going to make the truck less maneuverable, heavier and it’s going to cost more – certainly not a welcome prospect during tough economic conditions.

Keep Your Drivers Happy and On the Go

Another benefit of today’s Big Bore engines is they provide drivers with that intangible long associated with long-haul trucking – the need for big power – without having to spend the money on a massive 15-liter product.

“You can get the torque characteristics you associate with a large displacement engine with advanced turbo-charging on a smaller engine,” says Shick. “The MaxxForce 13, that engine feels big in power. You can keep your drivers happy without having to give them a huge engine.”

Your drivers are your company’s biggest asset—but first you need to give them the tools to succeed. By emphasizing solid training and minimizing unnecessary driver hassles, you can unlock huge productivity gains for your fleet.

As one of Ontario’s oldest continuously-owned family transport companies, Steed Standard Transport’s 95-year history is a testament to the connection between good training and business success. A shipper of general freight throughout North America, some of Steed Standard Transport’s drivers have been with the company for more than 30 years.

We asked the company’s president James Steed, as well as other experts, to share their advice on how to maximize driver productivity. Follow these tips and you’ll get the most out of your drivers—while also giving them a reason to stick around for the long haul.

Encourage good habits with bonus programs

Today’s sophisticated engine computers are able to provide fleets with a clear snapshot of idle time, fuel burned and other data. Leveraging this information is the key to a viable fuel bonus program—a tool that can save money and help with retention. Some carriers reward drivers quarterly if they meet certain targets like miles-per-gallon (mph) or idle-time percentage.

While the 25 trucks in Steed’s fleet are capped at 65 mph, he credits his firm’s fuel bonus program with encouraging good driving habits. “It helps us keep speed down, which provides better fuel economy for our fleet,” he says. Steed also cites residual benefits like improved safety, fewer engine emissions, reduced driver stress and fatigue, and less wear on tires, which tend to last longer when they don’t run as hot.

Regarding idle time, the company sets different bonus criteria based on application. “On a day cab unit, it’s 15 percent, because they’re running in city traffic all day. For a long haul driver, we have it down to 8 percent,” he says.

“It’s taken a lot of education,” he continues. “But the buy-in by the drivers has been great—they want to learn and want to do better. We’re not able to get increases in freight rates [in this economy], so anywhere you can save money is, in essence, bringing in extra revenue.”

Treat drivers with respect

Another key to maximizing driver productivity is keeping an open line of communication. Listen to driver suggestions, and you might discover a more efficient way of doing things.

Many operations think tough love will squeeze efficiency out of employees, but in most cases that couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, most successful fleets work hard to maintain a two-way street between dispatch and company drivers. “The question is: Are they part of the family or are they just a number that’s calling in?” says Steed.

It’s all about fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect, which extends to benefits that allow drivers to maintain a healthy work-life balance. “We put the drivers first,” says Dave Dudo, vice president of operations for Pittsburgh-based Beemac Trucking. “I came from a company that would commit to loads even after the drivers were booked. But we get the drivers home every weekend. We can still service our customers very well by running our drivers when they want to run.”

Elevate your top drivers

Drivers are the face of your company. So when possible, assign your best workers to key customers and let them further solidify the client relationship. “Our senior drivers get married to an account; they run the same load week in and week out,” explains Steed.

And while you’re not going to thrust a brand new driver into such an important role, look for employees who can be groomed for increased responsibility.

“Some lanes will run for six months; others for two years. But we have situations where one driver has been working with a customer for 35 years,” he adds. “As a smaller carrier, we have fewer clients; but we have a more intimate relationship.”

Minimize excess driver hassles

Heading towards 2010, most new trucks will be featuring engines with SCR, the urea-based technology that requires a separate tank and additional fluid (diesel emissions fluid, or DEF) that must be filled. And while SCR proponents argue that the system can improve fuel economy, operators should carefully consider their options as the industry approaches these more stringent emissions standards.

For with SCR, the burden of emissions compliance has been transferred—for the first time—to the user. From a driver standpoint, this means additional training.

“You’re going to have to be very clear about the fact that you can’t run out. You cannot ignore the warning system,” says Randall Ray, manager, engine sales and marketing, Navistar. “And while that sounds easy, every fleet manager has a story about a driver running out of oil, running out of water. If they don’t pay attention to the warning, the engine will go into derate mode and, eventually, be reduced to 5 mph.”

But even the best-trained fleets cannot control the fact that SCR adds another system to the truck, which could add unscheduled downtime. This stands in contrast with MaxxForce® Advanced EGR, the engine solution offered in all International® vehicles, where the driver’s interaction with the engine remains essentially unchanged.

Especially for those companies where trucking is not their primary business, the added level of training, and the possibility of downtime, elevates the importance of the 2010 engine decision. Construction and waste firms, as well as businesses with pick-up and delivery operations, all frequently employ workers who are not full-time drivers. “Those who don’t require a CDL (commercial driver’s license) run the risk of hiring drivers who might not take the dashboard warnings seriously,” notes Ray.

There’s also the issue of the availability of DEF. Companies that aren’t primarily in the trucking business are less likely to be buying the more economical 55-gallon drums, which means they’ll have to pay higher retail prices for much smaller quantities.

“The question is: Will the carrier take time to train the driver right up front? Is the driver going to read the manual?” adds Steed. “There’s a lot of information in those manuals already, and this is going to add another chapter to it. One plus I see with the new MaxxForce engines is, you won’t need to do that. You don’t have to do that training.”

Dealer service might not always factor into your truck buying decision. But it should. Fleets that buy solely on price are missing out on the big picture. It’s the behind-the scenes support of your dealer that’s often the difference between keeping your business moving, and having it grind to a halt.

Customers should think of dealers as business partners, not simply equipment suppliers, according to Megan Chernoff, marketing coordinator at Glover International Trucks in Alberta. And that relationship should begin the second you step on the lot.

“Our sales people are well trained and spend a lot of time with our customers,” she says. “It’s our goal to provide them with a customized experience.”

At Glover’s Calgary location, they have specialized staff who work with a fleet or municipality to identify their specific needs (for example, ways to utilize Diamond Logic® technology) based on their application. This helps the customer write their own unique spec around the International truck.

“It frees up a ton of their time when we can take that one thing off their plate,” notes Chernoff. “The customer will come in with some abstract ideas [regarding specs], and we help them turn those ideas into reality.”

“Customers feel more comfortable buying from somebody who knows what he’s talking about,” adds Tania Arsenault, sales and marketing coordinator at East Coast International Trucks in New Brunswick, which sells primarily to owner-operators. “The independent guys, they want you to hold their hand from the beginning until the end when they trade it in. When a salesperson is knowledgeable, the customer develops a greater sense of trust.”

Art Soper, of Kemptville International Trucks in Ontario, takes pride in the fact that many of their customers have been working with them since the dealership opened its doors 30 years ago. Their customer base includes large construction firms, municipalities like the City of Ottawa, as well as long haul fleets and owner-operators. And all of the above appreciate the creative ways Kemptville can serve as a one-stop shop.

“For example: We work with a gas distribution company, and we don’t only sell them their trucks; we contract their body work for them. We’ve basically stepped in and created a turnkey operation,” says Soper. “There’s one sales person solely responsible for that account. And every truck is checked over personally by him before it’s delivered. He deals with all the subcontractors, so by the time the truck reaches the customer, it’s ready to roll.”

Service that goes the extra mile

From a service standpoint, customers at Glover International—who range from regional and long haulers to urban vocational fleets—know that, with literally hundreds of International dealers spread throughout North America, they’ll always get the support they need.

However, that attention also expands beyond the continent, as Glover’s Diamond Logic specialist Phil O’Neil has even traveled overseas on behalf of a customer. Most recently, he updated the technology on some older trucks for a company that does a lot of work in North Africa. “This was Phil’s second trip to Africa, and both times he was there for three to four weeks helping them get their trucks up to today’s standards,” explains Chernoff.

And while your dealer should always be willing to go the extra mile, in most cases, it will involve assistance much closer to home. One way that dealers can make your life easier is by providing custom service packages, where technicians know exactly what your trucks need in the form of specific oils or maintenance intervals.

Of course, many customers handle their own service. But there are still plenty of examples of how a good dealer can make your technicians better—and in turn, help keep your trucks out of the shop and on the road. “We visit their locations and set up training with their technicians and go through the courses that are available through Fleet ISIS,” says Soper. “Even though they’re doing their own work, we’re in constant contact with them.”

And with the 2010 emissions requirements kicking in next month, it’s even more important that customers—especially those with in-house service personnel—have an open line of communication with their dealers. For most buyers of International trucks, the education leading up to 2010 started many months ago, with dealers setting up training seminars regarding the operational benefits of the company’s MaxxForce® engines and MaxxForce Advanced EGR technology. Many locations also provided customers with access to information in the form of timely news stories, Navistar-hosted webinars, and other business intelligence.

“The biggest thing is, we let the customers know there are no limitations in terms of contacting us,” Soper adds. “If they’re doing their own work, we have six locations that can deliver parts as they need them. We have drivers who can go to their location, pick up a truck for service, and then bring it back to them. It’s all about setting up a system to help them maximize their uptime.”

“Depending on how often you turn your equipment, you may only need a few associates who need to know about all the latest technological advances.”

For example, a beverage distributor or any regional pick-up and delivery operation has route trucks that don’t run very many miles over a year. Their duty cycle can be extended for a long period of time. These companies might want to have someone doing basic preventative maintenance internally. But they may also be willing to outsource more technical work to the dealer because they typically have some spare vehicles that can fill in while other trucks are being repaired. “The key, of course, is avoiding downtime,” notes van Niekerk.

If your fleet consists of essentially the same equipment—like a delivery fleet made up of medium-duty route trucks—ratcheting up your in-house service might be the right choice. In fact, many organizations purchase the same trucks year after year for that very reason: so they don’t have to train their technicians on a variety of different vehicles.

But if your business requires that you run a multitude of models and different types of utility vehicles, chances are you’ll need to outsource at least some maintenance work.

But trucks with urea-based SCR technology will require an added layer of training because of the additional aftertreatment system.

Toni Chandler has accumulated more than 1.8 million accident-free miles over the course of her impressive 14-year career, and just over 1 million of those miles were driven in an International® truck. Those numbers, along with a stellar on-time record, helped her become the first woman to win the Arkansas Trucking Association’s “Driver of the Year” award.

A company driver with CalArk Trucking just outside Little Rock, Chandler, 48, and her husband Leslie Paugh, 57, live for the open road. They don’t own a home; instead, they spend their days and nights in a 2009 International ProStar®, with Chandler doing the driving and Paugh handling the trip planning and truck maintenance.

The couple met while both were in the Navy and have been married for 25 years. According to Chandler, they bonded over a mutual love of travel and take pride in the fact that they’ve visited all lower 48 states and three Canadian provinces during their time together.

Member’s Monthly recently caught up with Chandler while she took a break in Washington State, one of her favorite parts of the country. We asked her to share some secrets to her success, and she happily obliged.

Q. Is this award a validation of your approach as a driver?

A. Yeah, I would think so. It’s a pretty hazardous world out there. When I drive, I try to stay with the speed everyone else is traveling. I’ve found that you always have to expect the unexpected, because you never know what the other guy is going to do.

Q. To what do you attribute your amazing safety record—1.8 million miles with zero accidents?

A. One thing is I try to make sure I get enough rest, and that I always get enough exercise, so I’m in good shape behind the wheel. Some places where there’s a lot of time between delivery and pick-up, my husband I will get out and explore the area on foot. And if we don’t have that luxury, I have different workout videos I use before I start my day. It’s a sedentary job, and you need to force yourself to get the exercise. I see drivers getting bigger and bigger all the time. And the food choices at truck stops aren’t always the best.

Q. Can you provide any other advice to your fellow drivers?

A. For me, my big thing was I didn’t like seeing the same scenery over and over again. And [I found] it gets boring rather quickly. I stay strictly over the road all over the U.S. It took me nine years to get all lower 48 states, but that was part of the adventure of it all; getting all the states in before I retire. But I think the main thing is: Don’t let the job get tedious, because that’s how you get bored and stop paying attention on the road.

Q. You’re currently driving a 2009 International ProStar. How’s the truck been treating you?

A. Well, my last four trucks were all International. And when CalArk buys new trucks, I have seniority so I always get the newest thing they’ve got. The 2009 ProStar feels really stable on the road. Some of the trucks I’ve driven feel like they wallow on the road; these trucks are heavy but they feel very sturdy. They put the controls on the steering wheel so you don’t have to reach while you’re driving. That definitely improves safety. They are also very quiet—there’s not a lot of road noise. I think that helps me from getting tired easily.

I’m also getting better fuel economy than the last truck I had, a 2007 International 9400i. And the way they have the gears set [in the 2009 ProStar] I’m able to pull hills better. That also helps [reduce] fatigue.

Q. Would it be fair to say that the design of your International trucks contributed to your safety record?

A. Probably so; if the driver is comfortable and handy with the equipment, there are less distractions. I also noticed that the seats are closer to the door, so it’s easier to maintain your lane position on the road. The sloped hood also helps me see more of what’s on the road in front of me. That also helps with safety.

Q. How satisfying is it to be the first woman to win this award, which was first given out more than 75 years ago?

A. I get a lot of other women saying: “Way to go! … It’s about time.” But it feels good, it does.

Q. After accomplishing so much, what’s your next goal?

A. Well, I at least need to make my 2 million miles and go from there. And we’ve got drivers who have done 3 million, so that’s the next step in line. And our safety director took me to the Arkansas Truck Driving Championships to see what that was like, so I think I’ll enter that next year and see how it goes. … I like to keep things fresh and keep the adventure going.

Owner-operator Jim Hart proud to reach mileage milestone in an International® truck

As an auto transporter, owner-operator Jim Hart reconnects people with their prized possessions. But for him, there’s no vehicle he cherishes more than his International® 9200, which hit the million-mile mark last year.

After more than 20 years in the auto aftermarket industry—and as a trained, certified technician—the 61-year-old Hart started the Grand Ledge, Michigan-based L&J Transport in 2005—the very same year he bought his 1998 model year International. He estimates he’s traveled more than 400,000 miles in those four years, hauling vehicles for those relocating across country, transitioning to summer or winter homes, or who have purchased a car or truck from the Internet. We spoke with him about what the million-mile milestone means to him and his business, and what it takes to stay successful in a tough economy.

Q. Can you tell us a little about L&J Transport?

A. I’m a sole proprietor, but I’m leased to another company. Once the customer brokers a job through us or through the broker system, it’s up to us to determine what to haul and when to haul it. I have a high mount trailer and can haul up to eight vehicles. I got into auto transportation a few years ago and really liked it. We kid around and call ourselves “vehicle relocation experts.” (Laughs) We try to perform a service: door-to-door pick-up and delivery. Our clientele is mostly word of mouth, which we’ve built up over the years and helped us be quite successful.

Q. How did it feel when that odometer hit a million?

A. Any time you get up there [in mileage], it makes you feel good. Especially when you hear other people talk about having to do overhauls and other things. I’ve had my truck checked over, and the way it performs and the way the injectors are working electronically, I expect to have it for many more miles.

Q. I imagine that kind of reliability means you can focus on other parts of your business.

A. If you have something that’s reliable, you don’t worry about the day-to-day things. I do the majority of my own maintenance. On the road, I keep a list of things that have to be addressed, and try to take care of everything when we get back. But the truck’s been very good. And when you think about replacement, it’s like, why would I want to change brands when it’s giving me good service?

Q. What advice would you give other operators or fleet managers in regards to maintenance?

A. You have to take a close look at the mileage you’re running per week and month. But keep in mind: you might be set up to change the oil every 12 or 15 thousand miles, but sometimes that’s not feasible.

To help with maintenance, I’d recommend a bypass oil system. It’s a little expensive to set up, but we’ve found that it works great, especially if you do an oil analysis. Every time you change your oil it’s sent to an independent lab, and they can see if there’s a potential problem or if you have a coolant leak or an injector’s not working properly. That’s good to know, so you can get it rectified before it turns into something really costly.

Q. What sort of features will you be looking for when you buy a new truck?

A. The first thing I’ll look for is aerodynamics. That’s a great big factor when it comes to fuel economy, especially for a car hauler because [the trailer] is basically one big cheese grater. And with International, I like their engine technology. I’ll sit down with my co-partner, who is my wife. In a few months, we’re going to look at those things and figure out what makes the most sense economically.

Waste

With less than a year to go before the EPA’s January 2010 emissions deadline, businesses across the country are hearing plenty of competing messages.

There are two distinct paths towards 2010 compliance: MaxxForce® Advanced EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) – the in-cylinder solution offered within International® vehicles – and SCR (selective catalytic reduction), the urea-based approach chosen by the majority of those North American OEMs with European roots.

To help clear the air – and separate fact from myth – we’ve put together Four Reasons why MaxxForce Advanced EGR is the right choice to keep your business running and fully compliant, in 2010 and beyond.

Lower Operating Costs

The biggest misconception related to SCR is that it will save you money on fuel. But fuel economy is only one piece of the story when it comes to your overall operating costs.

First, you need to consider the cost of urea, the diesel exhaust fluid required for the SCR system. Because MaxxForce Advanced EGR takes care of emissions within the engine cylinder, there’s less weight from an additional after-treatment system or additional fluids. This adds up to a 200- to 300-pound payload advantage versus SCR. Finally, there’s no extra maintenance, parts or training with MaxxForce Advanced EGR, which leads to more savings for the customer.

“The only way [SCR] would be an advantage from a fuel economy and cost per mile basis is if urea costs significantly less than diesel,” says Steve Perkins, senior sales specialist, MaxxForce Big Bore Engines. “And right now, it’s not cheaper. Farmers [who use a 100-percent nitrogen version of urea as a pre-emergence fertilizer] paid 120 percent more this year compared to last year.”

In fact, some European companies like Scania, which utilized SCR since the early 2000’s, have gone back to EGR because the cost of urea was offsetting any potential fuel economy advantage. And of course if SCR becomes a stranded technology, the cost of urea could go even higher.

Availability of Urea Is an Unknown

There are also real questions regarding the mainstream availability of urea. During a recent Commercial Carrier Journal webcast, many of the OEMs offering an SCR solution suggested that an infrastructure was in place. But informal research conducted by Navistar discovered that, at press time, the only locations currently selling urea were automotive dealerships offering 2-liter quantities. Is it realistic to believe that a sufficient infrastructure will exist in less than nine months?

Even some truck stop chains that have agreed to supply urea are not investing in bulk dispensing capabilities at the majority of their locations. In a February article in Today’s Trucking News, one major company announced that approximately two-thirds of its truck stops would only have packaged quantities of the urea-based diesel exhaust fluid available – certainly not a ringing endorsement, according to Perkins.

No Driver Hassles

With MaxxForce Advanced EGR your drivers don’t need to do anything differently – they simply turn the key and drive. But with an SCR-equipped truck, big problems can arise if the driver fails to re-fill the DEF tank or fills it with poor quality fluid. Additional sensors, control modules and a driver warning system need to be fully understood or the truck will de-rate and eventually grind to a halt.

“For that engine to be compliant it requires the driver to make sure the urea tank is filled with the right fluid,” says Bob Carso, director of marketing and global strategy, Navistar Engine Group. “Drivers have to be taught what all these parameters are and what will happen if they don’t have access to urea.”

“With MaxxForce Advanced EGR, it’s less for a customer to have to digest,” adds Eric Rosenquist, sales and leasing representative, Chicago International Trucks. “It’s less complexity, less new things to train drivers on, and less potential downtime if things don’t work properly.”

Choosing a Proven Technology Gives You a Competitive Advantage

International built MaxxForce Advanced EGR to seamlessly evolve to meet 2010 requirements. And working with an engine technology that has 9 million miles of success can greatly benefit your bottom line.

Most waste and refuse companies are restricted when it comes to chassis configurations – you need to run PTOs, pumps, hydraulics or other power – and that takes a lot of space on the chassis. And the complexity of the SCR system, which requires a tank, an additional catalyst, wiring, as well as the pump, could require expensive changes to body installations to accommodate the additional after-treatment equipment.

Then there’s the added weight of the system: the 200 to 300 pound payload advantage of the already proven MaxxForce Advanced EGR system means more money for your business with each trip.

Add it all up, and choosing MaxxForce Advanced EGR can actually give your business a leg up at a time when competition is tougher than ever.

“With MaxxForce Advanced EGR in our trucks, it’s a great advantage,” says Darrell Kohut, director of maintenance/operations at Hi-Way 9 Express in Calgary. “We’ll be keeping things moving forward while other companies are working with the challenges of SCR. We’ll be ahead of the competition.”

Customer Spotlight

It’s always tough out there for new businesses—especially for those launched on the eve of a significant financial downturn. That’s what makes the story of three-year-old Buffalo Redi-Mix Co. all the more impressive. According to shop manager Dan Novoa, the company’s choice to run International® PayStar® concrete mixers has played a big part in their success.

A subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based New Enterprise Stone and Lime, Buffalo Redi-Mix Co. produces and supplies ready-mix concrete for contractors throughout western New York. Currently, their fleet includes five 2008 and sixteen 2006 International PayStar 5600 vehicles, as well as a few International trucks from the ‘90s that they refurbished in-house.

All have been busy since day one, working on a variety of residential and commercial projects including a major lakefront multi-use concrete high-rise in downtown Buffalo. We recently caught up with Novoa to find out more about how his truck choice helped the firm get off on the right foot during challenging economic conditions.

Question: You went with International trucks from day one. What makes them a good fit?

Answer: One of the things I like about them is they’re easy to work on. The parts on all of the 5600s are interchangeable. The trucks have maintained the same consistent style, which works well for us, yet [Navistar] continues to improve things like the driver options.

Q. What are some of the improvements you’ve noticed?

A. Well, I’ll take a driver from a 2006 [truck] and put him in a 2008, and his first response is that the newer trucks have more power and have quieter cabs. International also added the DPF (diesel particulate filter) to the 2008s. We need trucks with a DPF in order to bid on state jobs for 2010, so we’re fortunate to have at least five of them in our fleet right now.

Our drivers also tell me the clutch is even more driver-friendly. That helps them on the job, because when they’re pouring slip form concrete (a construction method that refers to the moving form the concrete is poured into), they have to constantly inch ahead in the truck. If you’re pushing a hard pedal on a slip form all day, it can make a long day feel even longer.

Q. You mentioned the cabs were quieter. Why is that important for you?

A. Quietness affects a lot of areas for us, especially safety out on the road. It really helps being able to hear emergency vehicles approaching behind and things like that. And on the job site, if the operator has a contractor trying to tell them something, they can hear what’s going on easier. At the end of the day, I think it’s a relief for them to not have to be in a noisy cab all day.

Q. Does International provide good base level chassis to work with, so you can build a truck that meets your needs?

A. International runs the double frame, which you get less flex in, and that helps on our mixer frames. I’ve heard the single frame chassis can cause a lot more wear and tear on a mixer frame because of the flexibility… We run a 20,000-pound front axle, and a 46,000-pound rear, and it’s a pretty good truck running down the road with nine yards of concrete on it. That’s a Gross Vehicle Weight of 66,000, and they handle the payload really well.

Q. How do your trucks help address some of the safety issues for your fleet?

A. Obviously we don’t want to have any accidents on the job. We’re constantly looking out of the mirrors of our rear discharge mixers, because that’s where most of the work is being done. Our drivers are constantly backing up and going forward and avoiding obstacles, and the way the trucks are built, the visibility out of the cab really helps out.

The International PayStar trucks are very driver-friendly, and the front end is easy to guide around. The visibility is good out front; but it’s also good out that back window, which is important because our guys are always looking out the back to see how the drum is turning. My drivers are really happy with the cab and chassis on these trucks. Knock on wood, we haven’t had any accidents. And we don’t plan on having any.

Talking Seat Comfort Blues

Striving to increase driver satisfaction isn’t just about keeping drivers happy—it’s also about keeping them healthy, and in turn, more productive. Perhaps the easiest way to improve a driver’s well-being is to make him, or her, more comfortable while out on the road. And the best way to ensure maximum comfort is to provide a seat that fits his or her body type. However in Part 1 of our two-part conversation, Dr. H. Lenora Hardee, International’s Manager of Human Factors and Ergonomics, explains that simply specing a seat with ergonomic features is not enough. You have to make sure drivers know how to actually use them.

I’ve read that 40 percent of all truck drivers suffer from chronic back problems. How much of an impact can the proper seat adjustment have in regards to driver comfort?

It can have a huge impact. One of the major things that drivers complain about with seats is lumbar support. The lumbar is the lower part of the back. You see, when you sit, your pelvis rotates rearward. This causes your lower spine to flex and puts pressure on your lower disks. Over time this can lead to pain and even ruptured disks. A good seat will curve outward at the point where your lower spine contacts it. This curvature, or lumbar support, helps to straighten your lower spine out, making your lower back more comfortable and, potentially, healthier. Some seats have lumbar supports that adjust in and out. This can make it easier for each driver to customize the amount of pressure on his or her lower back.

The height of the lumbar support is really important as well—it has to come out far enough, but it also has to be located at the right height. You should be able to adjust the lumbar support, to move it up and down and in and out. Since there’s so much variability in people’s sizes, you have to make sure it works properly for you.

Is there anything else drivers or fleet managers should know regarding lumbar support?

Proper lumbar support can also make your pelvis more stable in the seat. Anything that stabilizes your pelvis and hips in the seat will help your seatbelt fit better. So, you get kind of a double-whammy benefit from a good lumbar support feature in a seat.

But having a seat with enough seat-back recline is also extremely important to sitting comfort. If the seat back is too upright, it requires the driver’s back muscles to work constantly to keep him or her from falling forward, leading to back fatigue over time. To counteract this, the driver will shift his or her hips forward in the seat. This will then create two different comfort problems: 1) the driver may now feel like he or she doesn’t have enough leg room, and 2) the lower back is now shifted forward and away from the seat’s lumbar support.

What about seat height?

The overall vertical adjustment of the seat is also important. If your feet can’t reach the floor that can cause problems by cutting off the blood supply in the back of the legs. This can be very painful, and over time can cause long-term health issues. This is a common problem for female or shorter drivers in general. Many trucks are built for big guys, so sometimes smaller people get forgotten about.

Why don’t some fleets put a priority on seat comfort? Is it because some view ergonomic seats as luxury items?

Yes, that can be a problem. A very price-conscious fleet might choose a fixed seat with no vertical adjustment because it’s the cheapest thing they can put in the truck. Certainly as you add features the prices go up, but what these fleets may not be realizing is that they’re costing themselves money down the road if they’re creating a driver who has health problems because of the seat. But remember, just because it has all the features doesn’t automatically make it a good quality seat. As I said, it can have great lumbar support, but that won’t do much if the seat is adjusted too high or too low. There aren’t comfort standards for seats to be built to, so it’s kind of a minefield.

What are some of the seat features you’d recommend?

Well, you can’t fit a wide range of sizes of people with a fixed seat. So if a fleet is interested in providing good accommodation for all of its drivers, it’s going to have seats with vertical adjustment. Air ride seats are also much more comfortable because the air will provide a little shock absorption so the driver doesn’t get banged to death going down the road. Plus, your seats should feature fore-aft adjustment, which allows you to slide the seat forward or back so you can get close enough to or far enough away from the pedals, adjustable lumbar support, and sufficient seat back recline. Finally, a tall seat back is preferred, to provide enough head restraint to prevent whiplash. Those features are a good star and can be requested during the specing process.

Pick-Up and Delivery

Leading Body Maker Expects Seamless Transition in 2010

This month, the EPA’s 2010 standards go into effect, mandating an 83 percent reduction in NOx from previous generation engines: from 1.2 gram per horsepower to 0.2 gram. And while there’s little doubt that clean engines are good for the environment, some fleets are concerned that the new technology might impact body packaging or increase maintenance costs. But Wayne Childress, vice-president of sales for Mickey Truck Bodies, says he expects a seamless transition in 2010 with Navistar’s MaxxForce® Advanced EGR solution.

Manufacturers have chosen two primary paths to meet the new emissions limits: SCR, which incorporates additional aftertreatment devices and a tank for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF); and MaxxForce Advanced EGR, the approach used by Navistar on all International trucks, which utilizes an in-cylinder solution and adds minimal weight and no additional gear to already crowded frames.

Childress expects Mickey, one of the leading makers of beverage and regional dry van truck bodies, to start building atop chassis with the 2010 technology in the next few months. He says engineers from Mickey have been in communication with their counterparts at Navistar well before the January emissions milestone to ensure that the packaging will remain essentially the same.

“There’s going to be very little difference in how we mount a beverage body,” he notes. “We look at whatever might extend horizontally, and so far we haven’t seen anything that could get in the way. We’ll be altering the same way we always have. There will be no change in the way we cut the frame, except for maybe an inch one way or the other from back of cab to the front of our bulk head.”

Childress emphasizes that much of the reason customers can remain confident that the packaging of 2010-compliant International trucks will remain the same is because both companies took the time—and worked together—to anticipate any specific vocational challenges with the 2010 product.

“Constant communication is critical,” Childress adds. “It’s really important that our engineers are talking to each other, because every dealer can’t be expected to know the ins and outs of every vocational use. [When dealing with new technology], it’s up to Navistar to alert us, because that will prevent any issues that may come up. [The easy transition in 2010] is really a testament to how Navistar does business.”

With van bodies and specialty vehicles such as fire and emergency, the transition to 2010 will be even easier than with beverage trucks, because no frame alterations are necessary, he says.

In contrast, Tim Shick, director of marketing for Navistar Engine Group, notes that the SCR-equipped engines from some OEMs could pose challenges for some body makers.

“The thing about SCR is it takes away the versatility and the options of the body maker,” explains Shick. “This is just one more fairly significantly sized area in a very specific place on the truck that gets taken off the board as far as a place to work with…they can’t move it, they can’t take pieces out and move them somewhere else; it has to stay pretty much where it was placed by the manufacturer.”

This can lead to major headaches for companies that make and install bodies, who in extreme cases are going to have to lengthen the wheelbase of some vocational trucks in order to make room for external equipment along with the additional after-treatment system. For the end-user, this is going to make the truck less maneuverable, heavier and it’s going to cost more—certainly not a welcome prospect during tough economic conditions.

Weight is certainly a factor beverage, utility and regional fleets should consider when deciding on 2010 technology. For most trucking operations, payload equals revenue; and the approximately 300 pound payload advantage of the already proven MaxxForce Advanced EGR system means more money for your business with each trip.

“[A heavier chassis] would affect us, because we try to give the end user the lightest truck possible,” notes Childress. “Generally, our customers are working with a 33,000-pound weight limit, and they could easily exceed that if they weren’t paying attention.”

Add up the numbers, and choosing MaxxForce Advanced EGR can actually give your business a leg up at a time when competition is tougher than ever.

“International built MaxxForce Advanced EGR to seamlessly evolve to meet 2010 requirements,” says Shick. “Working with an engine technology that has 9 million miles of success can greatly benefit your bottom line.”

Finance Introduction.

DuraStar

Investigate DuraStar's Reliability.

Pick-up Delivery

Construction

“Depending on your application, you may only need a few associates who need to know about all the latest technological advances.”

For example, a waste company or construction contractor likely runs its trucks within a close range of its own facility. It probably makes sense for these companies to perform basic preventative maintenance internally because their trucks are usually never far from the home shop. But they may also be willing to outsource more technical work to the dealer—especially if they have some spare vehicles that can fill in while other trucks are being repaired. “The key, of course, is avoiding downtime,” notes van Niekerk.

If your fleet consists of essentially the same basic equipment—for example, the same dump trucks or rear-loader waste haulers—ratcheting up your in-house service might be the right choice. In fact, many organizations purchase the same trucks year after year for that very reason: so they don’t have to train their technicians on a variety of different vehicles.

But if your business requires that you run a multitude of models and different types of utility vehicles, chances are you’ll need to outsource at least some maintenance work.

But trucks with urea-based SCR technology will require an added layer of training because of the additional aftertreatment system. For waste and construction applications, the additional tank, catalyst and wiring of the SCR system could also require changes to your existing chassis configurations—adding more complexity for your technicians to have to untangle.

For years, Lakeside International Trucks (Milwaukee, WI) met their customers’ requests for technician training by scheduling training sessions, or by supplying courses on CDs and DVDs. Now, they are able to provide web-based training using the Navistar Learning Management Systems (LMS) to help customer technicians feel more confident when servicing their own trucks.

“As vehicle technology becomes more complex, many dealers are hard pressed to satisfy all of their customer requests for training,” says Brian Mulshine, manager, service development and truck/parts education, Navistar, explaining the growing popularity of web-based education. “Technical training has evolved into a basic need.”

Lakeside International Trucks was one of the first dealers to provide a “dealer university” portal for customers. According to sales manager Todd Soczka, the system is easy to set up and maintain, and his customers have been impressed with what it has delivered in terms of convenience and cost-effectiveness.

First off, technicians can complete their training around their own schedules or even at home. And because the courses are well-produced, designed and concise, time off the job is limited, which minimizes the impact on productivity. Finally, the tools enable management to track which employees are taking the courses, as well as monitor student progress, and print out official certificates as a record of completion.

“We can provide a high level of factory training online, nearly as comprehensive as what our dealership techs are given,” says Soczka, who notes that his dealer also offers instructor-led classes.

Basic education courses include vehicle systems and diagnostics. Education courses for specific vehicles are also available; for example, a customer who purchases an International® ProStar® may choose to select courses for basic serviceability, MaxxForce® engine systems, electrical, suspension and HVAC systems. These courses can be accessed from any computer with Internet access.

“Educating customers to properly operate and maintain their vehicles can help increase uptime and reduce maintenance costs,” says Mulshine. “The Learning Management System is a dynamic and flexible solution that provides customers with unprecedented access to International service training and support.

“And for those businesses considering making the shift to International trucks, the system can offer real peace of mind. Especially moving into 2010, it can ensure that technicians—as well as drivers—are confident with every facet of our products.”

Chris Hawker became the envy of truck stops everywhere when he received the keys to the first International® LoneStar® Harley-Davidson™ Special Edition last month at a celebration at the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee. The event also kicked off the “Drive for Jobs” campaign, with Navistar announcing plans to donate funds to help train returning military personnel for careers in trucking.

Being the first driver behind the wheel of the International LoneStar Harley Davidson Special Edition has been particularly sweet for Hawker, 47, an International loyalist and longtime Harley-Davidson enthusiast from Westfield, NY. He also owns a 2003 Softail® 100th Anniversary Edition bike with a paint schematic closely resembling his new truck.

Hawker was considering purchasing an International LoneStar truck earlier this year, before the Special Edition version was even announced. And when he got a call from Randy Leighton, his sales representative at the dealership Five Star International in Erie, PA, about this “dream truck” coming out, the decision was a no-brainer.

“I like to drive something a little different. The first time I saw the LoneStar I was really, really excited to see a truck like that,” Hawker explained from the road on the way to Harley-Davidson headquarters the day before the event. “I did spec one out the way I liked it, but I wanted a little more time to think about it. It’s a big commitment. But when Randy told me about the collaboration between International and Harley, I went and looked at the pictures online and pretty much told him to order me one right then and there. I used the same specs I had before.”

Among the other custom specs Hawker has already ordered include proprietary International DoubleSix™ options such as a front bumper light, vertical chrome cab extender lights, a leather-wrapped gear shifter, and LoneStar truck mats.

While last month’s event served as the “official” key hand-off, Hawker has actually been driving the International LoneStar Harley-Davidson Special Edition since August. At press time, he had racked up almost 24,000 during his usual New York-to-Florida route delivering dry freight food products. He says the truck’s quiet ride and easy handling, as well as the amazingly comfortable interior, have made his job a lot easier.

“I remember, the first time I went to drive it. I couldn’t wait to go to work that day,” he recalls with a laugh. “It’s fun to ride just like a Harley.

“Plus, I’m really impressed with the inside,” he continues. “The way the cabinets are made, the custom Harley gauges. The looks, the style…it’s just a beautiful truck.”

And as an Army veteran, Hawker was also especially proud to participate in Navistar’s “Drive for Jobs” campaign. The event at the Harley-Davidson museum also launched the promotion, and for every mile Hawker drove in his new truck for a two-week period leading up to Truck Driver Appreciation Week in early November, Navistar agreed to donate cash to the Army Pays Program, which trains returning military personnel for careers in trucking.

“I was in the Army for 14 years,” says Hawker, who received his CDL while in active duty in the early ‘80s, and remained in the reserves for several years after. “Driving a truck is what I love doing. And if I can help some of these troops pay for their truck driving school, I think that’s great.”

Biodiesel Fuels Shift to Aluminum Fuel Tanks

In a pre-emptive move to account for the growing usage of biodiesel blends among its customers, all new International® trucks will feature a non-corrosive, aluminum fuel tank—instead of the previously standard steel tanks—starting in 2010.

“The problem is, anaerobic algae and some other living critters love biodiesel,” explains Bob Nietzel, vocational marketing manager, Navistar. “They set up colonies, and reproduce at rapid pace by eating biodiesel, producing biologic acids and solid waste.”

According to Nietzel, good quality biodiesel has alcohol and “biocide” added to help control these parasites. But the combination of the alcohol and the acids can create strong solvents inside fuel tanks.

An aluminum fuel tank—while not immune to corrosion—holds up better than steel to this biological waste attack.

“We recognized these inadvertent consequences of biodiesel, which is why we chose to make an aluminum tank standard on all of our trucks,” says Nietzel, who notes that the tanks are available in both polished and un-polished versions. (Steel tanks can also be ordered for those who have absolute confidence in their fuel source.)

“Biodiesel is the fuel of the future, of that there is no question,” he adds. “We just need to understand how to work with it.”
